When to Visit Cyprus for a Group Weekend: A Month-by-Month Guide

The most useful thing to know about Cyprus is that the good season is far longer than people assume — and that the months outside it are worth coming for too, just for different reasons.

The short answer: May through to the end of September is the full summer season, and every one of those months is a good one. Outside that window the island is still very much worth the trip. You just won't be swimming.

Here's the year as it actually runs.

May through September is the season, and there isn't a weak month in it. Warm from the start, the sea comes up as the summer goes on, and everything is open. Groups sometimes ask us which of those five months is the best one, expecting a single answer. There isn't one — pick the weekend that suits your group's diaries and it will be a good weekend.

What does change across those months is how busy it is. July and August are the peak: the hottest months, the fullest, and the nightlife at its loudest. If that's the weekend your group wants — proper summer heat, the sea warm, everywhere at full volume — this is when to come, and it's the busiest time of year for good reason. The one thing to take seriously is booking. The villas and boats worth having go earliest for these dates, so a group deciding on July in May is choosing from what's left rather than from what's best.

May, June and September sit either side of that peak. Same warm weather, same everything-open, with a bit more room and better availability on the places that book out. September in particular tends to surprise people: the sea is at its warmest after a whole summer of heating up, and the crowds thin as European school holidays finish.

October through April is a completely different weekend, and a good one. This is not a shoulder season where the island shuts down and waits for tourists — Cyprus is a place people live all year, and the restaurants, the bars, the towns and the mountains carry on regardless. What you lose is swimming. What you get is everything else without the heat: proper walking and trails, quads, wine country in the Troodos villages, long lunches you can sit outside for, and cities that feel like themselves rather than like high season.

Spring is the pick of it. March and April are green in a way that startles people who've only seen Cyprus in August, and the temperature is right for being outdoors all day. Orthodox Easter falls somewhere in this stretch and moves year to year — a wonderful time to be here and a hard one to book late, so check the date before you settle on a weekend.

Winter on the coast stays mild — this isn't northern Europe. It suits a city weekend: eating well, going out, spa, and a day up in the mountains if the group wants one. Limassol's carnival lands in this stretch and is a genuinely big deal in the city.

So, briefly. May to September for a summer weekend, any of them, with July and August the hottest and busiest and the ones to book furthest ahead. October to April for a group that wants Cyprus without needing a pool — which, once people get here, turns out to be a lot of them.

One thing matters more than the month, whichever you pick. The accommodation worth having is a small pool of places and they go in the order people ask. Deciding your dates three months out and booking then gets you a better weekend than deciding six weeks out and paying more for what's left.
